Juvenile arrested, 19-year-old shot and arrested for grand theft auto attempt this morning at Lynnewood Gardens apartments, Cheltenham police seeking witnesses

The Cheltenham Township Police Department announced that officers on patrol near the Lynnewood Gardens apartment complex heard gunshots on Thursday, December 19 around 4:57am.

Police subsequently received multiple 9-1-1 calls for reports of shots fired in the 2100 block of Mather Way, also in the Lynnewood Gardens complex. Arriving officers determined that a resident of the complex had fired multiple shots at two individuals who were attempting to steal their car.

One of the suspects, a juvenile, was apprehended following a foot chase and found to be in possession of a stolen handgun which was illegally modified to fire fully automatic. The juvenile also had multiple warrants out of Philadelphia for drugs and weapons offenses and was found to have removed their court-ordered ankle monitor.

They were charged in relation to the attempted theft as well as weapons charges and were detained at the Montgomery County Youth Center, police said.

The second suspect, a 19-year-old, was found hiding a short distance away and had sustained gunshot wounds to both legs. Police said they were transported to an area Trauma Center for treatment and were discharged. The suspect is now facing charges in relation to the original attempted theft.

This incident remains under investigation by Cheltenham detectives and additional charges may be pending in consultation with the District Attorney’s Office.
