Jenkintown150 holding reflective essay contest for grades 1-12

The Jenkintown 150th Anniversary Committee is holding an essay contest titled “What Jenkintown Means to Me: Reflections on the Past, Present, and Future of Our Community”.

Grade Categories:

  • Grades 1-4
  • Grades 5-8
  • Grades 9-12

Scoring Criteria:

Essays will be evaluated on:

  • Creativity (30 points): Originality and imagination in expressing unique ideas about Jenkintown.
  • Content and Relevance (40 points): Connection to Jenkintown’s past, present, or future.
  • Clarity and Expression (30 points): Organization and ability to convey thoughts and feelings clearly.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Word Count:
    • Grades 1-4: 100-250 words
    • Grades 5-8: 250-500 words
    • Grades 9-12: 500-750 words
  • Deadline: November 29, 2024
  • Announcement of Winners: December 2, 2024
  • Student must reside in Jenkintown proper. 

Prizes:

Winners in each grade category will receive exciting prizes, including gift cards to local businesses, a Jenkintown 150 t-shirt, and a shopping bag. Prize highlights include:

  • Grades 1-4: $25 gift card to J-Town Market, $50 gift card to Capricorn Books
  • Grades 5-8: $50 gift card to This Little Gallery, $25 gift certificate to Lilly’s
  • Grades 9-12: $150 cash prize from the Jenkintown Community Alliance, $25 gift certificate to King’s Corner

Special Opportunity:
Winning essays will be preserved in a time capsule to be buried on December 8, 2024, as part of the anniversary ceremony. Winners will be invited to read their essays at this historic event, creating a lasting legacy for future generations.
