Kristin M. Noonan, MD, Jefferson Abington Hospital general surgeon, recently traveled to Comayagua, Honduras with Operation Hope Medical Missions to perform life-changing procedures.
The team worked at St. Benedict Joseph Medical Center, a Catholic charity hospital serving communities with limited access to healthcare. Many patients traveled long distances on foot, often descending from mountainous regions, to receive care.
Delivering High-Impact Surgical Care
Dr. Noonan joined a team of 28 volunteers who completed 89 surgeries — including three general surgeons, a gynecologist and four surgical teams. All participants volunteered their time and covered their own travel expenses.
Dr. Noonan performed 21 surgeries and assisted on three additional cases, including a hernia repair on a five-year-old child, a complex gallbladder removal and a sarcoma resection in a young adult.
“About half of us were newcomers meeting for the first time and we bonded very quickly,” she said.
In addition to surgical care, the group visited three local Catholic orphanages, delivering donations and spending time with children and their caregivers.
Reconnecting With the Heart of Medicine
The trip marked a return to international service work that began during Dr. Noonan’s medical training. “I went on a mission trip in medical school fixing cleft lips and palates and always wanted to go again as an attending surgeon,” she shared.
The Honduran experience provided a drastic change from the structure of everyday clinical practice and reinforced the human connection at the center of medicine.
“Being able to provide care to the indigent with scarce healthcare access was an incredibly fulfilling experience,” Dr. Noonan said. “Getting back to the humanity of medicine touched my soul and refilled my cup.”
The demanding schedule included a full clinic day, five days of surgery and multiple days of travel. Despite the intensity of the work, Dr. Noonan came back each day with a renewed sense of purpose.
“I returned from the trip exhausted, but my heart was overflowing,” she shared. “This work helped me remember why I went into medicine, and specifically surgery in the first place, and it reignited my passion to lay hands on and heal.”
Dr. Noonan’s participation reflects Jefferson Health’s mission to improve lives, and bringing surgical care to underserved communities abroad, extends that impact far beyond hospital walls.
