Jack Sarsfield, Flourtown junior firefighter, starts First Responders Club at Springfield High School

Jack Sarsfield, a Flourtown Fire Company junior firefighter, was recently featured by The Times Herald for starting a First Responders Club at Springfield Township High School.

According to the article, he started the club “because he saw an opportunity for students to connect with their local first responders and feel safer in their environment. On top of that, he noticed the lack of young volunteers in the fire industry.”

The article notes that his father has been a volunteer firefighter for over 40 years, and that the club now has 11 active members who meet twice a week to discuss fire safety, tactics, and events. Last year, the club hosted “Chat and Chill with First Responders” for students to meet Springfield Township firefighters, police and EMS personnel.

“Events like this are a chance for kids to bond with first responders. My experience with my local fire company has been incredibly positive and I wanted to show students they could have the same experience,” said Sarsfield. “You are always accepted at any fire company. We love seeing new faces.”

The club has led to four new junior members at Oreland Fire Company.
