History with Mike: Abington’s manse house at the corner of York and Old Orchard roads

If you’ve ever peered out the back window of the Abington Free Library at 1030 Old York Road and wondered about that old-looking house with the colonial exterior, you were looking at the original manse of Abington Presbyterian Church.

To clarify, a manse is a house occupied by a minister of a Presbyterian church. Abington’s manse, located at 1823 Old Orchard Road, came along after most of the church’s farm was sold for $19,000 in 1856. The church used $4,500 of the transaction to purchase 13 acres along Susquehanna Road, including Isaiah Hubb’s house on the corner.

After the transaction, the church farm was no longer associated with Abington Presbyterian.

For a time, the house was known as the Lambert House and was owned by Malachi Jones’ family for 142 years. Today, the house is a private residence with multiple apartments for sale.
