History with Chuck: The defunct Temple Stadium, site of Eagles’ 64-0 win and many Abington, Cheltenham football games

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, on Tuesday, November 6, 1934, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Cincinnati Reds 64-0 at Temple University Stadium, located right off of Cheltenham Avenue in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia.

The 64 points scored by the Eagles is still a team record for most points in a game, and the 64-0 score is the most lopsided regular-season game in NFL history. The 2:45 pm contest only drew an estimated 2,000 fans because the Eagles and Reds were last-place teams and it was Election Day.

Temple played their home games at the stadium from 1928 to 1977, and the venue was the site of many Abington and Cheltenham High football games over the years. To purchase an Abington vs. Cheltenham Temple University Stadium football program from 1928, you can click here.

On December 31, 2001, the site was sold to Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church for $4.5 million. The area which was formerly used as a parking lot and intramural field, north of the former stadium, is now home to the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church’s “East” church, completed in 2006.
