Local historian Chuck Langerman shared that Cheltenham High School and the late Philadelphia Phillies legend Richie “Dick” Allen’s alma mater—Wampum High in western Pennsylvania—are the only known high schools in Pennsylvania state high school basketball history with three brothers who have all scored over 1,000 career points.
The first trio of brothers to score over 1,000 career points in Pennsylvania history are the Allen brothers from Wampum High School. Richie Allen, who passed away on December 7, 2020, scored 1,931 career points at Wampum High and led the school to the small school state title in 1958. His older brother, Hank, scored 1,259 points, while younger brother Ron tallied 1,195 career points. All three brothers played Major League Baseball.
Richie Allen will be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York on July 27, 2025.
The second trio of brothers are also the sons of Dr. Robert Mansell, a resident of Laverock and owner of Robert J. Mansell Dental in Abington Township. Harris Mansell ’05, who went on to play for Rider University, scored 1,919 career points during his high school career, the most ever by a CHS boy. Harris’ scoring numbers are bested only by former University of Maryland All-American and WNBA professional Laura Harper ’04, who finished with a school-record 2,009 points.
Patrick ’06 (pictured in action above), who also played for Rider, finished his CHS career with 1,869 points.
Robert ’10 finished his CHS career with 1,215 points. He went on to play at Binghamton University in New York.
Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley’s Random Act of Kindness
In May 2015, sophomore Rachel Panek (pictured below) of Saucon Valley High School (Lehigh Valley) won the 100-meter hurdles race at the Colonial League championships.
According to Langerman, a clock issue forced a second race, during which Panek hit a hurdle and finished eighth. Saquon Barkley, a boys’ sprinter from rival Whitehall High School and a complete stranger to Panek, gave her his gold medal after winning his conference’s 100-meter sprint title.
Barkley (also pictured below), who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, set a franchise record for single-season rushing yards Sunday in a 22-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
According to ESPN.com, Barkley is on pace for 2,122 rushing yards, which would top the all-time single-season rushing mark set by Eric Dickerson in 1984 (2,105).
