History with Chuck: Remembering Cheltenham baseball’s all-stars from the inaugural Phillies’ Carpenter Cup Tournament

Mark Smedley (pictured above right), a 1986 graduate of Cheltenham High School and a centerfielder for the baseball team, blasted a two-run homer on June 16, 1986 at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium in the fourth inning a first-round game of the inaugural Phillies’ Carpenter Cup Tournament.

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, the Suburban One American All-Stars went on to defeat the Philadelphia Catholic League 15-8 in the cup game, which was held in honor of the family that formerly owned the Phillies.

The 1986 Carpenter Cup featured future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Mike Piazza of Phoenixville High. The Cheltenham High baseball team, which had just won its first league championship since 1979, was honored with eight players on the roster, including Smedley, Jeff Bickart, Scott Feller, Dave Rovine, Doug Burman, Tom Kelly (pictured above left), Chuck Obrecht, and Tim Strosser, and head coach Steve Kolinsky.
