History with Chuck: Coventry Market and Valley Market of Elkins Park

Coventry Market, once located at 737 Valley Road in Elkins Park, had a lifespan from September 7, 1978 to March 13, 1994.

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, the market was located in a stone house catercorner from the Melrose Park Train Station on Valley Road near Coventry Road (hence the name). Its Jewish soul food attracted customers from greater Glenside, Philadelphia, and beyond, and was owned by Danny and Marsha Rovner.

The deli sold 70 varieties of meats, cheese, fish and salads, and 40 types of baked goods. Prior to Coventry, the location was known as Boone’s Market, and after, it was known as Valley Market & Delicatessen.

The property lies dormant today. If you have any fond memories of the market, please feel free to share in the comments.
