In light of Cheltenham senior Jordan Sowell’s new Pennsylvania record last week, local historian Chuck Langerman has shared that the Panther boys’ and girls’ track and field teams now own four PIAA state records.
According to Langerman, Cheltenham’s John Lewis set the state mark in the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.72 in 2015.
The following year, the girls’ 4×100-meter relay team of Bria Barnes, Brielle Lewis, Alexis Crosby, and Chanel Brissett (above) set the state standard with a time of 45.78.
Also in 2016, junior Chanel Brissett broke the PIAA state record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.19. Brissett’s best time in the event was 12.95, set in July 2016 at the Olympic Trials at the University of Oregon.
1979 SOL Baseball Title
In a one-game playoff at Germantown Academy to determine the Suburban One League champions, the Cheltenham High School baseball team edged Plymouth-Whitemarsh 4-3 in nine innings to capture the league title on Wednesday, May 30, 1979.
Junior Mark Caplan’s ninth-inning RBI single was the game-winner, and senior Bill Englehart was the winning relief pitcher for junior starter Adam Kohler (pictured below) after six innings. Designated hitter Bob Walker had a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.
The 1979 champions were coached by Steve Kolinsky and 1975 CHS graduate Gary Bonitatibus. That season, Bill Englehart, Mark Caplan, and Michael Vernick were all first-team All-Suburban One selections.
