History with Chuck: Cheltenham’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each won SOL titles in 2004 | First Lady Panther to score 1,000 career points

The 2004 Cheltenham High School boys’ basketball team, coached by 1989 graduate Dr. Scott Eveslage, and the 2004 Lady Panthers, coached by Hall of Famer Bob Schaefer (above left), each won Suburban One League titles.

Since then, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have won division titles, but not in the same season. According to local historian Chuck Langerman, this could be the year as both teams went into the New Year with 3-0 league records in their respective Suburban One League Freedom Conferences.

On Friday, January 3, the Lady Panthers will play at home against New Hope-Solebury, while the boys will travel to New Hope.

Fun Fact: Dr. Eveslage (pictured below) is now the superintendent of the Hatboro-Horsham School District.

First Lady Panther to Score 1,000

17 Lady Panthers have scored 1,000 or more career points during their Cheltenham High School careers. According to Langerman, 16 of those 17 girls played during the 31-year tenure of Coach Schaefer.

The first to break the 1,000-point plateau for the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs was Gina Miniscalco (pictured on the far right above) with 1,189 career points in 1984.

Miniscalco, a 5’8″ shooting guard, Gina ended her brilliant career in 1988 with exactly 1,000 points for Drexel University. At Cheltenham, she was an All-Area and All-Suburban One selection on her way to leading the Lady Panthers to the PIAA state tournament for the first time in school history.
