History with Chuck: Cheltenham grad August ‘Auggie’ Gershwin’s record-setting wrestling career

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Cheltenham High School Class of 2017’s August “Auggie” Gershwin is the first wrestler in school history to notch 100 wins since the legendary Wilbur “Dutch” Lehman started the program in 1933.

On February 20, 2017, Gershwin won his fourth consecutive sectional/league individual championship. He became the first Cheltenham wrestler to earn four of the same postseason crowns.

“It seems every year I get asked if I’m a senior,” Gershwin told PA Prep Live moments after coming down from the victory podium. “I’m just trying to get as many wins as I can and get to Hershey.”

The middleweight and three-time team captain ended his high school career with a 105-27 record. He won at least 20 matches each year he competed, including a 33-5 mark during his senior campaign.

“Auggie” went on to wrestle for East Stroudsburg University where he majored in Criminal Justice.

He is now a police officer serving the City of Philadelphia and an avid powerlifter. To watch a wrestling match—considered an upset—from Gershwin’s Cheltenham days, you can check out the video below:
