History with Chuck: Abington High School hosted the longest basketball game in Pennsylvania history

On Friday, February 18, 1972, Abington High School hosted the longest high school basketball game in Pennsylvania’s history.

Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School edged Springfield (Montco) 65-63 in eight overtimes to win the Suburban One League boys’ basketball championship. The game’s box score is here:

Fun Facts:

The national record is 13 overtimes from a 1964 game played between North Carolina high schools Angier and Marner’s Boone.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, “The longest NBA basketball game is 78 minutes and was played between the Indianapolis Olympians and Rochester Royals (both USA), at Edgerton Park Arena, in Rochester, New York, USA, on 6 January 1951. The game was won by the Olympians 75 to 73 in what turned out to be a six-overtime game.”

The longest Major League Baseball game took place on May 1, 1920 and lasted 26 innings. To view more on the MLB’s longest games in history, you can click here.

The longest AAA baseball game lasted more than 32 innings. From NPR’s coverage:

After eight hours and 32 innings, the game still wasn’t over. The teams would have to wait two months before finishing, and when they finally resumed play, instead of 19 fans in the stands, there were nearly 6,000, with reporters from around the world to watch the end of the longest game in history. The story was nominated for a Webby award.
