Local historian Chuck Langerman has shared with us a story about two high-profile Abington High and Cheltenham High alumni working together at the highest levels of government.
According to Langerman, in January of 2016, Glenn Fine (left above), a 1974 CHS graduate, became the principal deputy inspector general at the Department of Defense (DoD) after being nominated by President Barack Obama. The inspector general acts as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense in matters regarding DoD fraud, waste, and abuse.
Ironically, at that time, the Secretary of Defense was 1972 Abington High graduate, the late Dr. Ashton Carter (right above).
Former Secretary Dr. Carter earned his bachelor’s degrees in physics and in medieval history, summa cum laude, at Yale University, and he received his doctorate in theoretical physics from Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar. At Abington High, Dr. Ashton Carter was a wrestler, lacrosse player, cross-country runner, and president of the Honor Society.
He was enshrined in the AHS Hall of Fame in 1989. For more on his life and career, you can click here.
Fine earned a B.A. in economics from Harvard University where he was co-captain of the basketball team. He graduated in 1979 and was drafted by the NBA San Antonio Spurs, but chose to attend Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship before going on to attend Harvard Law School.
He was inducted into the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame in 2002. For more on his life and career, you can click here.
