Highmark Blue Shield adds Jefferson Health to its provider network

The Philadelphia Business Journal reported that Highmark Blue Shield has added Jefferson Health, which has more than 42,000 employees and 50 outpatient and urgent care centers in our region, to its provider network.

“We are thrilled to add Jefferson Health to our provider networks in the Philadelphia region,” said Dan Tropeano, Highmark’s southeastern Pennsylvania segment president.

“This agreement with Highmark will expand Jefferson’s ability to provide high-quality healthcare services throughout the region and further our mission to improve lives in the communities we serve,” said Dr. Joseph G. Cacchione, CEO of Jefferson, in a statement.

According to the article, Highmark expects to begin providing individual, small and large group health insurance in southeastern Pennsylvania on January 1, 2024 and “is targeting 2025 for introducing Medicare Advantage and Medicaid/Medicare dual eligible plans in this region.”

The decision will leave Highmark and Independence Blue Cross competing for commercial members.

“No one knows our region better or could serve it with more commitment,” Independence Blue Cross said in a statement. “Our focus on and commitment to this community are deep-rooted and exhibited through programs, services, and our social mission.”
