Healthy Individuals Needed – No Shoulder Pain

Dr. Phil McClure at Arcadia University in collaboration with the University of Oregon, was awarded an NIH grant to study “The Effects of Exercises on Pain and Rotator Cuff Muscle Function.” McClure and his research team are studying muscle activation in people with and without shoulder pain before and after treatment. We are currently looking for interested healthy participants.

  • If you have healthy shoulders, you may be eligible to participate.
  • Females between the ages of 50-55
  • Males between the ages of 38-55
  • The protocol consists of 1 session lasting approximately 1 hour.
  • Testing requires electrical stimulation of your muscles.
  • Screening will be performed during lab visit to determine eligibility.
  • Compensation is available for participation.
  • This study is approved by Arcadia University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). COVID-related precautions will be followed during data collection.

Our Research Goal

Shoulder pain is a common problem and frequently involves irritation of the joint and tendons of the rotator cuff muscles which are located within the shoulder. Rehabilitation, guided by a physical therapist, is the first line of treatment for many shoulder conditions including rotator cuff problems. We are seeking to better understand how pain and muscle activation respond to standard treatment and why some people respond better than others. We are studying these responses in people that have shoulder problems and compare the results to those that do not have shoulder problems.

Our Dedicated Team

Our group includes physical therapists and an orthopedic surgeon dedicated to understanding the underlying causes of shoulder pain and developing optimal treatment approaches to managing shoulder pain. We need healthy individuals with no shoulder pain to come in for the study.

If you are not experiencing any pain and are between the ages listed above, you can indicate your interest by completing this screening questionnaire. The Shoulder Research Team will then follow up with you to confirm eligibility: https://www.arcadia.edu/college-health-sciences/departments-faculty/physical-therapy/shoulder-research-center/screening

If you or you know of anyone with who might be interested in this study, please let us know. Compensation will be provided for eligible patients.
