An unidentified 18-year-old male from Hatboro was shot during an altercation that occurred in Lafayette Hill on Wednesday, November 13, the Whitemarsh Police Department announced.
According to their report, Devin Burns, 19, of Glenmore, Chester County, has been arrested for charges related to the shooting.
The incident took place at approximately 10:41pm when Whitemarsh police received a report of a disturbance in the gravel parking lot section of Miles Park (399 Germantown Pike in Lafayette Hill). Police received a second call for “someone banging on the rear door of a residence” that borders Miles Park along Hillside Road.
Arriving officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the pelvic region. Officers and medics from the Whitemarsh Community Ambulance rendered aid and transported the victim to Abington Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
When additional officers arrived at Miles Park, the participants in the original disturbance had already left the area, police said. Officers recovered one shell casing.
An investigation revealed that “two groups of young adults, ages 16 to 19, approximately 12 total, had arranged to meet at Miles Park for two females to participate in a fist fight related to boyfriend issues,” Whitemarsh Police Chief Christopher Ward said. “When the groups arrived at the park, the females began to fight, with more females jumping in. At some point, Devin Burns produced a handgun and shot the victim, who had arrived with the opposing group.”
On November 14, Pennsylvania State Police Troopers attempted to arrest Burns in Chester County. He fled through six jurisdictions and was eventually stopped by State Troopers, at which point he “intentionally rammed one of their occupied police units before being taken into custody,” Ward said.
A firearm was recovered from Burns’ vehicle and placed into evidence. He was arraigned in Chester County and his bail was set at $150,000 cash. The defendant was unable to post bail and was remanded to the Chester County Correctional Facility, police said.
The Whitemarsh Township Police Department is investigating the incident. If you have any information, you can contact the Whitemarsh Township Police Department Detective Division at 610-825-6530.
