Governor Josh Shapiro has created a federal political action committee called New Path PAC, CNN reported today.
According to their coverage, the PAC is “the latest sign the Democrat may want to run for president in 2028.”
The new group “could also give him more flexibility to financially support candidates across the country, a common practice of potential White House contenders”, CNN wrote, noting that the PAC’s executive director is Marshall Cohen, the former political director of the Democratic Governors Association.
Cohen reportedly said in a statement that the path to Democrats winning the House majority “runs right through Pennsylvania – and Governor Shapiro is fighting to win up and down the ballot this November to elect leaders and deliver a Congressional majority that will actually fight for working families and move our country forward.”
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Shapiro spent nearly $38 million this year on TV and streaming ads and has accrued $60 million in his state-level PAC since he took office in 2023. Shapiro cannot transfer funds from his state-level PAC to his federal PAC, which will allow him to fundraise and contribute directly to Democratic candidates.
Shapiro’s reelection campaign has drawn support from former President Barack Obama, former President Joe Biden, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, The Inquirer said.
While Shapiro has an average 23-percentage-point advantage over Republican nominee Stacy Garrity, his odds are longer for becoming the 2028 Democratic presidential standard-bearer, averaging 6% support to front-runner former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 26%, according to RealClearPolitics.
