Members of the William Penn Chapter National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) presented handmade Quilts of Valor to Phillip “Phil” Grant and Rouzalin “Lina” Shehata, a married couple from Royersford.
The quilts were awarded during the NSDAR meeting on Thursday, December 4 at Abington Presbyterian Church in Glenside. A Quilt of Valor (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war. The program has donated more than 400,000 quilts to service members worldwide. Each veteran is also given a certificate.
Grant served 20 years in the Pennsylvania National Guard as a chaplain’s assistant, including three overseas deployments in Iraq, Jordan and Kuwait. His first deployment in Iraq was in active combat, for which he was awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon and Armed Services Reward Medal.
Shehata served as chaplain’s assistant in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2001-2014. She received the Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
Sue Singer, Registrar, led the sewing of the quilts and the presentation.
“Today and every day, we honor and thank our service members and veterans for their dedication and sacrifice in defending our freedom. We also salute their families, recognizing the strength and support they provide,” Singer said.
Included in the presentation were the couple’s three daughters: Sophia, 10, Isabella, 8, and Graciella, 6.
