Quigg Deli recently announced that the Dairy Queen side of business at 850 N Easton Road will be no more as of November 23.

A deli predated the 1991 Dairy Queen addition, so essentially the space is returning to its origins. After more than a decade under corporate whim, co-owners Eilish and her mother Geraldine Quigg decided to lean towards flexibility.

“We’re mainly looking forward to having more of a work-life balance. After so many years, you can only do so much. With a franchise, there are rules that have to be followed. Among other things, we couldn’t close when we wanted. We’re sad to see it go,” Eilish said. “We appreciate everything that the community has given us. It’s a great place to live, and I love that I can work and live in the same town.”

Going forward, the Quigg family’s focus will be narrowed to the deli and the selling of imported Irish goodies, including Irish biscuits, candy, sausages and sausage rolls.

“We added that about six years ago,” Eilish said. “My mom is from Ireland and she’s a great cook.”

Eilish started working at Glenside Dairy Queen in 2001 at the age of 14. She and her mother took over Castlewood Deli in May 2010.

“We’ll still offer the sandwiches, hoagies, and homemade meatballs every day, and we’re looking to expand our menu. My mom started a seasonal soup last week. We don’t know exactly what else we’re going to add, but a good portion of it will be homemade. We’re also going to offer a catering menu. We’re working on those details now,” Eilish said.

The Quigg family has been in Glenside for 35 years, and the deli is operated by a loyal staff that includes Eilish’s cousins, brothers, and sisters.

“Our staff has worked hard for us and stuck with us through this change,” Eilish said. “They’re the reason we were able to survive Covid. If they weren’t here, we would’ve closed a long time ago.”
