Jenkintown’s Independent Fire Company and Jenkintown Police assisted by Glenside, and Weldon Fire Companies responded to a reported gas leak on Runnymede Avenue this afternoon.

According to Jenkintown Fire Marshall Kevin Lynch, the house at 309 Runnymede is currently vacant, and gas was detected coming from the basement and from the front yard. The basement also serves as the garage in which is currently stored several motorcycles. Mr. Lynch said he saw evidence of work performed on the bikes, which is a violation of Borough fire codes.

“There’s a concern about carbon monoxide being released into the house when you start them up,” he said.

Though the basement was locked, members of the Independent Fire Company were able to gain access to the basement by climbing in a back window. No injuries were reported.
