FOX29 covers Jenkintown’s bonfire tradition woes

Jenkintown schools superintendent Dr. Jill Takacs sent many members of the Jenkintown community into an uproar when she released a statement declaring the annual Homecoming Bonfire tradition’s end.

FOX29 came to the Borough to cover the story.

“It’s just about not breaking down the traditions. Traditions are what makes us a nice, close-knit community,” Nora McCloskey, President of the Home and School Association, told FOX29. “It’s gone. Yeah, with little to no discussion. That’s the part that bothers me the most.”

A new sports-centric tradition will attempt to fill the void of the bonfire, but has received limited enthusiasm from community members.

“I don’t know, it’s not the same as the bonfire. It’s different, it’ll be new, exciting, but it won’t be the same,” Jonathan Williams said.

Jenkintown’s Homecoming football game took place on Friday, October 14.
