Former McDevitt assistant becomes winningest coach in NCAA basketball history

Luigi “Geno” Auriemma, head women’s basketball coach at the University of Connecticut whose coaching career began at the former Bishop McDevitt High School (Wyncote), officially became the all-time leader in wins among college basketball coaches on both the men’s and women’s sides, Sports Illustrated reported.

No. 2 UConn’s 84–41 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday night gave Coach Auriemma his 1,217th victory. He is now 1,217–162 over his career (.883 winning percentage) with 23 Final Four appearances and 11 national championships. UConn has had six perfect seasons during his tenure, including in 2015–16, the program’s most recent national title.

“We never sat down and said, ‘Hey, let’s make a 40-year plan and see if we can make this happen,'” Auriemma told ESPN.com. “It’s about coming here every day and trying to be better than we were yesterday.”

Fun Fact: Kathy Osler, Auriemma’s wife of 46 years, graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1972 and was a varsity cheerleader. According to local historian Chuck Langerman, they met during the first home basketball game of the 1972-1973 season via Kathy’s good friend and former Cheltenham High cheerleader, Robin Friedman (’72).

According to Friends of Bishop McDevitt, Auriemma’s first coaching position was with the Lady Lancer basketball program during the 1977 and 1978 seasons. He was an assistant varsity coach under Jim Foster and head JV coach for two years.
