Dr. Brian W. Scriven, superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, issued an update to the community today regarding the arrest of Kenneth Vaughn, 35, a former Cheltenham Elementary teacher.
According to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, Vaughn was arrested in New Jersey in August on charges related to distribution of child sex abuse materials.
Somerset County officials said that the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force notified the Prosecutor’s Office of a Cyber Tipline Report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children concerning files depicting sexual abuse and/or the exploitation of a minor via a social media and messaging platform. Vaughn was arrested on August 26 following an investigation. He is charged with 2nd degree, Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Materials and 3rd degree, Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Materials.
Vaughn had been employed as an elementary school teacher in Branchburg, New Jersey, at the time of his arrest. He was last employed by Cheltenham schools during the 2022-2023 school year.
“This news is extremely difficult to share. Protecting the well-being of our students is our most important charge, one which we take very seriously,” Dr. Scriven wrote, noting that the district’s counselors and mental health professionals are available to provide emotional support.
“While we are not aware that any district students have been victimized in any way, we encourage parents/guardians to speak to their children, and, if any additional information comes to light, we encourage you to contact Cheltenham Township Police Department,” Dr. Scriven wrote.
Vaughn was hired by the Cheltenham School District as a fourth-grade teacher in 2020.
