The photo below, titled “Breaking Ground for New Abington Gym”, was published in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin on May 13, 1940.
From left: Tommy Hyndman, class president; Joseph C. Weirick, superintendent of Abington Township schools; A.W. Zackey, president of school board, and his son, Roy, class president.
On May 15, 1940, the Bulletin reported that the interior and exterior of the gym cost $200,000, accompanied by the photos above and below.
Guests were permitted to take a look that evening, though the new building was not dedicated until the fall term.
