Flash flooding and severe thunderstorm potential from August 6-10, forecasters say

Forecasters from the National Weather Service have issued a flood watch in greater Glenside and are calling for “flash flooding and severe thunderstorm potential” from August 6-10.

According to their models, isolated to scattered storms are possible tonight as Tropical Storm Debby moves north.

“Severe weather isn’t our only threat tonight. We have a flood watch in effect for portions of the region and are concerned about rainfall rates in urban areas along with areas with poor drainage. Small streams and flashy basins may also see some river flood potential as well,” the agency said in a post this afternoon.

The Oreland Volunteer Fire Company posted the following cautionary message for area residents:

There’s a lot of rain coming. The forecast is 1.5-2 inches in the next 24 hours. It won’t stop there. Depending on its track, Debby could dump as much as 4-8 inches on us Friday through Saturday. Please do everything you can to stay out of flood waters. In addition to the inherent physical dangers, there is also the Ick-factor. Flooding gets into the sewers and washes raw sewage out into wherever the flood waters go.
