The Rockledge Borough Police Department announced that a firearm was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked on N. Sylvania Avenue near Huntingdon Pike sometime during the evening of Friday, August 9 into Saturday, August 10.
The firearm’s owner has reported the incident to police, though officials are unsure if the vehicle had been specifically targeted and hope to provide a description of the suspect(s) soon. If any nearby residents have cameras which recorded any suspicious activity regarding this theft, you are asked to call 9-1-1.
“Please lock vehicles, park in private driveways or well-lit areas on the street, if possible,” Chief John Gallagher said. “Use steering wheel locks, if available, and activate vehicle alarms. Also, take an extra step by locking glove compartments and/or center consoles, if they are equipped with locks.”
Gallagher also urged residents not to leave firearms in vehicles.
“If your firearm is stolen from a vehicle and you have License to Carry a Concealed Weapon, then the issuing authority can/will be notified and your license can possibly be revoked under a Just Cause standard (carelessness, negligence, disregard for firearm safety),” he said.
Residents are encouraged to stop by the police station for a free steering wheel lock courtesy of Mayor Jim Caffrey and the Hyundai Corporation.
