  4. One of the most illustrious residents of Gilded Age Cheltenham was the banker, Jay Cooke. Cooke is best known for his heroic efforts to raise millions of dollars for federal expenses during the Civil War. After the war, he directed the construction of the Northern Pacific transcontinental railroad as well as the school that became Penn State Ogontz. This FREE lecture will explore his early life and review his tenure in Chelten Hills, where he built one of the most extravagant estates yet seen in the United States. The lecture will feature recently discovered photographs of Ogontz that have not been seen publicly for 150 years. His generosity provided homes in Cheltenham for several esteemed friends as well as a new church to offer convenient access to religious services for residents of the area. Facebook Event
