  4. Glenside’s July 4th Celebration is widely know as the biggest and best family-friendly Independence Day Celebration in the Greater Philadelphia's area. It's a big city event in a small town setting! The three part event, which has been running for over one hundred years, takes place in both the Abington and Cheltenham Township sections of Glenside, which is in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The day-long celebration begins (typically at 10am) with a children's morning program in Renninger Park. The morning program features a children’s parade of decorated bikes, strollers and wagons. This is followed by a field day of sports contests including foot races and potato sack races. The morning program concludes with awards and lunchtime refreshments. At approximately 4pm on the Fourth, a long and festive Fourth of July Parade takes place in the heart of Glenside. The parade, which began in 1904, is annually attended by up to 50,000 people. It follows a two-hour long, 1.5-mile path through flag decorated streets and ecstatic crowds of onlookers. Given its national renown, the parade is able to feature locally and nationally coveted entrants that keep attendees coming back year after year. The Glenside Fourth of July Celebration's rousing finale is an after-dark "America the Beautiful Aerial Fireworks Spectacular" at Abington Senior High and Middle Schools' athletic grounds. Police have estimated annual attendance of tens of thousands, with many viewers coming back every year from nearby areas of eastern Montgomery County, lower Bucks County and Northeast/Northwest Philadelphia County neighborhoods. Words simply cannot do justice to describe this long-cherished day in Glenside. The celebration has been taking place for over 100 years because it is now a family tradition for generations upon generations of revelers from all over Southeastern Pennsylvania. Such a day of celebration and good cause cannot be done without cost. The Glenside Fourth of July Celebration - which is completely admission-free for the public - is funded and run entirely by the all-volunteer Greater Glenside Patriotic Association. This nonprofit not only spends the entire year planning the annual celebration, but they pay the yearly bill for the event (now approaching $60,000) through generous donations from the local community and businesses. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be provided via check to the “Greater Glenside Patriotic Association” at PO Box 72, Glenside, PA 19038 or via the “Donate” button on this Facebook Page. We thank you for your ongoing support and can’t wait to see everyone at this year’s event!!! -- Greater Glenside Patriotic Association
