  4. Clapton America returns to The Royal this Saturday, with new band members and new songs. “We can’t wait,” said bandleader Vic Monaco. “It’s like coming home.” Many Philly area musicians were leery to play indoor gigs in 2020 because of the pandemic. Such was the case for Monaco’s established oldies band that went on hiatus for several months. The band members wanted to keep up their chops as a group and were looking for something new to fill their gig-less months. Monaco had fronted the popular Countdown to Ecstasy Steely Dan tribute band several years ago, and he and his new bandmates knew tribute bands were not just a passing fad. “If anything, they’re more popular than ever,” said Monaco. “One reason is the high cost of tickets for original legacy artists.” Before too long, the band decided to pay tribute to Eric Clapton. Soon after they added a keyboardist and female backup vocalist, and Clapton America was born. The six-piece group played only its second gig at The Royal, almost exactly one year ago. Since then, they have brought on several new members including lead guitarist Al Stiver, a sought-after player who also performs with several other groups including Mid-Life Crisis. “We cover more than three decades of Clapton’s varied work beginning with his work in the late 60s with Cream,” said Monaco. “We’re faithful to the original records and a couple live versions from Clapton concerts.” The show at The Royal will start at 8 pm and include two sets of Clapton music along with one set of oldies, from the 60s and 70s with special guest Charlie Hallowell, the original lead guitarist in Clapton America. Tickets are $17 online presale or $20 at the door (cash or Venmo). Tickets available at theroyalglenside.com/tickets
