Elkins Park School (Cheltenham School District) closed Jan 9 and 10 due to faulty heating pipe

Dr. Brian Scriven, superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, announced this evening that the Elkins Park School will be closed for the remainder of the week (January 9 and 10) due to a faulty heating pipe.

According to his memo, the pipe leads from the boiler “which carries steam to the radiant heaters in the building.” The hole in the pipe is “releasing steam into various parts of the building. This resulted in steam leaking into ceilings, a stairwell, and certain portions of the hallway on the second floor and the main lobby.”

Dr. Scriven noted that a contractor was on-site yesterday and today to address the problem with the school’s facilities team. The boiler will be shut down for two days in order to repair the leak.

“We expect that we will resume school on Monday, January 13, 2025. Should that change we will out an additional communication by 5:00pm on Sunday, January 12, 2025,” Dr. Scriven wrote.

All morning, afterschool and evening activities are cancelled for the remainder of the week.
