Logan Byers, a 2023 graduate of Cheltenham High School and a volunteer firefighter for the Elkins Park Fire Company, was featured in an article by PhillyLacrosse.com for making a swift recovery from burn injuries sustained during a December 1 housefire in Elkins Park.
“In the process of putting the fire out, I felt the heat around me build up as I advanced down the hallway; when I opened the nozzle to cool it down, the water hit the wall, and the steam built up and burned me,” Byers told PhillyLacrosse.com.
According to the story, he is currently recovering from second-degree burns on his neck and his left ear, and first-degree burns on his neck, back, right ear, and left arm.
Byers was first taken to Abington Jefferson Hospital and then airlifted to Jefferson’s downtown hospital where he spent three days in bed and underwent surgery to repair some of the burns. He was named Elkins Park Fire Company’s Firefighter of the Year following the December 1 incident.
“We are grateful for the speedy recovery of our Firefighter of the Year, Logan Byers,” the company said in a post. “We look forward to cheering his lacrosse and academic efforts from afar, and having him continue to fight fires with us when he’s home.”
His bandages were recently removed and he has received the go-ahead to begin workouts for his 2025 lacrosse season at Capital University (Columbus, Ohio).
“My dad got me into [firefighting] five years ago,” Byers told PhillyLacrosse.com “Every time we walked the dogs we saw signs (for volunteering) and he’d say, ‘You should do that!’ I thought, ‘Why not?’ So I signed up and I loved it. It’s the adrenaline rush; I love the feeling when a call comes in. It’s kind of like playing lacrosse – when you get the ball. It’s that feeling.”
