The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia was named the most famous abandoned building in the world by unoccupied house insurance experts at Alan Boswell Group, Travel & Leisure reported.
According to the story, the team analyzed 916,000 social media posts mentioning #abandonedbuilding and cross-referenced it with the most popularly tagged and mentioned individual buildings. Eastern State had 204,000 social mentions. The Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital in Germany came in second in with 54,000 posts, and the Ohio State Reformatory came in third with 47,000 posts.
“Described as America’s most historic prison, the most popular abandoned building to visit is the Eastern State Penitentiary,” the team explained in the findings it provided to Travel + Leisure. “The prison, which closed in the 1970s, was considered unique in its treatment of inmates that were subjected to confinement in solitude with labor.”

The team noted that tourists can experience guided or audio tours which include stories about notorious inmates like Al Capone, whose cell has been preserved as-was.
