Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, renowned astrophysicist, to receive honorary degree at Arcadia’s commencement this week

Arcadia University’s 167th annual Commencement ceremonies will take place this Thursday and Friday. More than 850 students will receive doctoral, master’s, and baccalaureate degrees over two days of ceremonies.

Thursday’s ceremony will include an honorary degree granted to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, the renowned American astrophysicist and author, who will be in attendance. 

Graduate Commencement: 

  • Thursday, May 18
    • 5 p.m. Certificate, Graduate, and Doctoral Ceremony
    • Honorary Degree Recipient: Neil deGrasse Tyson

Undergraduate Commencement:

  • Friday, May 20
    • 10 a.m. Baccalaureate Ceremony
    • Honorary Degree Recipient: Sara M. Lomax

Students in the Class of 2023 have achieved their dreams of graduating, including:

  • Angelina Brewer, a ceramics major and member of the Ojibwe tribe who spent time growing up on a reservation in Wisconsin. Brewer weaves herbs related to Native American culture into her projects and plans to pursue a master’s degree before returning to the reservation to teach. Read more here.
  • Natalie Matson, a Biology major with a minor in Neuroscience, who studied the impacts of a ketogenic diet on nerve regeneration – specifically, whether the keto diet is beneficial to enhance recovery after injury. 
  • Jeremy Harman, an Actuarial Science major who also minored in Computer Science and Data Analytics and has passed two actuarial exams. He’s interned with A-O-N and will begin his full-time career there next month. 
  • Madeline Lynch, a double major in Politics, Government, and Law and in Spanish, who advanced to the semi-finalist round to earn a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award to travel to Colombia. Her dream is to teach there for a year, then go to law school to work toward a career in immigration law. 

Nancy Glass, CEO and executive producer for Glass Entertainment Group, will address master’s and doctoral candidates at Thursday’s graduate ceremony, and Lomax will address baccalaureate degree candidates of the Class of 2023 at Friday’s undergraduate ceremony.
