Deer cull underway in Cheltenham Township

A deer cull is underway on publicly owned open space properties in Cheltenham Township. The controlled deer hunts are conducted by Abington Deer Management and involve bow hunters (no guns are used). The hunts will be permitted through January 1, 2021. Signs will be posted in areas where the hunts are taking place during this period

The township has allowed such hunts over the past four years to reduce the number of deer in the community. According to the notice, reducing the number of deer is necessary due to impacts with vehicles, damage to trees, and Lyme disease.

In related news, the township is investigating the posting of deer crossing signs in areas deer frequent.
