Cheltenham superintendent announces results of investigation into shell casing found on floor of Myers Elementary School classroom

Dr. Brian W. Scriven, superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, issued a notice to the community today regarding an unspent shell casing found on the floor of a classroom at Myers Elementary School (7609 Montgomery Avenue in Elkins Park) on Friday, October 17.

An investigation, with assistance from the district’s Safety and Security Department and the Cheltenham Township Police Department, “confirmed that no weapon was involved, there was no plan to harm anyone, and the item in question was not obtained on or near school grounds,” Dr. Scriven wrote, noting that “this was an isolated incident, and there was no threat to the safety of students or staff.”

“Appropriate disciplinary and restorative actions have been taken in alignment with Cheltenham School District policies and in coordination with local law enforcement,” the notice said. “We take all safety-related incidents extremely seriously and respond with accountability and care for all involved.”

The notice continues:

Our school and district leadership have worked closely with the families of the students involved to ensure that measures are in place to prevent a recurrence. We will continue to implement and monitor all district safety procedures and protocols with diligence.

Myers Elementary School continues to be a welcoming, safe environment. The safety of our students and staff is always a top priority. Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office if you have questions or concerns that you would like to discuss.
