Cheltenham High School senior Corey Bradley was recently featured by the Philadelphia Inquirer in an article titled “Cheltenham’s Corey Bradley was still mourning after his mother’s murder. Baseball gave him a chance to honor her.”
The article details Bradley’s athletic accomplishments—he grew up playing for the Glenside Youth Athletic Club, is a member of the Panthers’ baseball team, and is considered one of the best wrestlers in school history—and the close relationship he had with his mother, Elizabeth, who was murdered on April 10 by her estranged husband.
According to the story, Bradley found out about the tragedy the next day while he was in school. He played his final game with a Cheltenham High School uniform on Monday, May 6, and she was a constant presence in his thoughts.
“I would tell her about friendship problems or even great things between friends,” he told the Inquirer, “and she was all ears. She wanted the best for us.”
“I’m taking it better than a lot of people would,” he continued. “That’s what my mom would want. She wouldn’t want us to go off the rails and lose our sense of direction.”
The story goes on to discuss Cheltenham baseball’s ascent from a winless 2021 season to a 9-11 record this year. Bradley rejoined the team after taking a year off to focus on wrestling, playing first base and batting nearly .400 as a senior.
“There’s nothing he couldn’t do for us,” Cheltenham baseball coach Kevin Hite said. “Just his presence on the team, it’s like a beautiful cloud. I have a teenage daughter, and he’s the type of young man you’d be safe to bring your daughter around. He’s a gentleman.”
Bradley is planning to attend Elmhurst University, a Division III school near Chicago, to wrestle and major in exercise science.
