Dr. Scriven’s announcement on Tuesday regarding the cancellation of the 2026 Cheltenham High School football season has been covered extensively by regional outlets.
The stories don’t provide information beyond the announcement and the backstory, though The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote that Cheltenham School District previously denied a Right-to-Know request seeking the findings from the external investigation that was completed in January.
“The district cited the portion of Pennsylvania’s Right-to-Know law that exempts records of noncriminal investigations from public disclosure,” The Inquirer wrote.

In response to the news, local historian Chuck Langerman shared with Glenside Local that the 1976 Cheltenham High School football team was one of the best in school history.
According to Langerman, the 1976 Panthers finished with a 10-1 record and a share of the Suburban One League title for the first time ever.
Under former head coach Ted Weinstein (below left), the squad came within a few points of becoming the first team in school history to have a perfect regular season, losing to Norristown High School before an estimated overflow crowd of 6,000 fans in Wyncote.
12 Panthers were named All-Suburban One that season: John Kane (below right), Tod Elkins, Joe Leva, brothers Fred and Al Ciavardelli, Dave Wardle, Steve Vaught, Eric Race, Tom Dawson, Marty Hediger, Bill Dando, and Dave Millili.
To cap off the season, the 1976 Panthers defeated Abington High School 28-6 in their annual backyard rivalry.
