Cheltenham School District officials announced today that a report through the 911 dispatch system said that a high school student was being chased by an unknown individual in possession of a firearm this afternoon.
According to a letter by ShaVon Savage, assistant superintendent, two Cheltenham police officers arrived at the high school at 2:50pm and informed building administration of the report. Police said the call was made “from off-school grounds but the caller told dispatch that they were headed in the direction of the high school.”
“Out of an abundance of caution, all students participating in sports and afterschool activities were brought back into the high school if they were outside, and the school went into a secure hold,” Savage wrote.
The secure hold was lifted at 3:29pm after police and safety officers determined the report to be unsubstantiated. Students were then able to return to their afterschool sports and activities outside, Savage said.
“We understand incidents like this can cause concern, and we are grateful for the swift response of our students, staff, and local law enforcement,” Savage wrote. “The safety and well-being of our school community remain a top priority, and we remain vigilant when these situations arise.”
