Cheltenham grad’s book cover design voted best in 2023 by New York Times

Emily Mahon, a 1996 Cheltenham High School graduate and Doubleday Books art director, was chosen by The New York Times’ Best Book Covers of 2023.

Mahon designed the cover of the novel “Your Driver is Waiting” which was released earlier this year. From the Times’ description:

The illustration captures bitterness and class resentment with a restraint that serves as a visual metaphor for the frugal ways and means that help the protagonist survive the gig economy. The upside-down sticker of the smiley face on the cracked mirror is a welcome, if snarling, grace note.

Mahon has been the art director at Doubleday Books since 2006 and has freelanced for a range of publishing clients, including St. Martin’s Press, HarperCollins, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Henry Holt and Company, Alfred A, Knopf, Little, Brown and Company, and Simon & Schuster, among others.

She studied Graphic Design and Spanish at Penn State before making her way to New York City.
