Rue Landau, a 1987 graduate of Cheltenham High School, was elected to an at-large seat and will serve as the first openly LGBTQ person on Philadelphia’s City Council.
“I am so excited. Philadelphia has once again made history. I’m the first openly LGBTQ council person ever, and I will serve with pride and make sure that Philadelphia remains a beacon of safety for the LGBTQ community,” Landau told 6ABC News.
“I am the first and I absolutely will not be the last,” Landau told WHYY News.
According to 6ABC, Landau and her partner were the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in Pennsylvania in 2014.

In related news, Democrat Christy Brady, a 1990 graduate of Cheltenham High, defeated Republican Aaron Bashir in the city controller race.
According to NBC10, Brady received more than 200,000 votes to Bashir’s 50,000.
