Cheltenham grad, Phillies ‘Peanut Purveyor’ since 1976 graces today’s cover of the Inquirer

Cheryl Spielvogel, a 1968 graduate of Cheltenham High School, is featured on today’s front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer for an article titled “After 49 years of selling peanuts at Phils games, she’s ‘not giving it up’”.

According to the story, Spielvogel is the oldest Phillies vendor working today. She worked as a systems analyst for a medical company for 45 years and started working night games in 1976 as a side hustle.

“I’m 73, and those 40 rows, they’re getting to me,” she told the Inquirer. “Forty rows, up and down. But I’m gonna have a cane, and I’m still gonna be going up and down those rows. I am not giving it up.”

Her business card lists her titled as “Peanut Purveyor”, according to a 2021 article by Delco Times.

“When I started there were five items for sale: hot dogs, popcorn, peanuts, beer and soda,” she told the Times. “Beer and soda used to come in cups with a plastic lid, but they always came off. It was a sloppy job, so I went for peanuts. I’ve never regretted it.”

After working thousands of games, she believes this year’s team is the best in franchise history. She also prefers Citizens Bank Park to Veterans Stadium.

“The Vet was all cement and falling apart,” she said. “The wires were drooping. They take care of this place. I just think it’s beautiful. When I walk through the portals and I see it, my little heart starts beating, you know?”
