Larry Atkins, a graduate of Cheltenham High School, Elkins Park native, and a professor of journalism and social and ethical issues in sports at Arcadia University, had an article published by U.S. News & World Report titled “The New Olympic Sport That’s Spinning Heads – Literally”.
The article discusses the advent of breakdancing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, chosen in part because organizers wanted to add events that appeal to younger audiences.
“Inspired by hip-hop, breakdancing evolved as a dance style in New York City in the 1970s. It includes acrobatic moves, spinning, arm strength, flips, fancy footwork, gymnastics and, of course, high energy hip-hop music,” Atkins, author of the 2024 book “Foul or Fair? Ethical and Social Issues in Sports”, wrote.
He goes on to note that the Olympics have evolved over the years, replacing antiquated events like tug of war, rope climbing and croquet (circa early 1900s) with flag football and squash (circa 2028 in Los Angeles).
