Cheltenham assistant superintendent resigns to head up Upper Merion schools

Dr. Tamara Thomas Smith, Cheltenham School District’s assistant superintendent, announced today her resignation from a position she has served since 2016.

According to her farewell note, Dr. Smith is leaving Cheltenham to become the superintendent of the Upper Merion Area School District. If appointed by the school board, she begins in March.

A Philadelphia native and a Lower Merion resident, she is a graduate of the Friends’ Central School and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from La Salle University, a Master of Education Degree in Elementary Education from Arcadia University, a Master of Education Degree in education policy from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership from Saint Joseph’s University.

From her farewell:

Dear Cheltenham School District Community,

With mixed emotions, I’m writing to share that I am moving into a new position in another school district. I wanted to express my gratitude to the incredible students, families, and staff of the Cheltenham School District. Serving as the Assistant Superintendent in our district for eight years has truly been an honor and a privilege.

As I assume the role of Superintendent in the Upper Merion Area School District this March, I will always be energized by the commitment to excellence, the spirit of innovation, and the passion for education that characterize the Cheltenham School District.

I want to thank each school community member — administrators, teachers, support staff, families, and, most importantly, our students — for your collaboration, support, and friendship. I am immensely proud of our work together.

Leaving behind the bonds forged in this district is undoubtedly bittersweet, but I am excited about the opportunities ahead. I am genuinely grateful for the chance to have been a member of this extraordinary community.

I look forward to carrying the spirit of Cheltenham School District with me as I embark on this new adventure. Wishing you all continued success and prosperity.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Dr. Tamara Thomas Smith
