Charles “Duke” Greco, a Lower Moreland graduate, was recently named a recipient of the Bill “Pickles” Kennedy Award courtesy of the Oldtimers Bats and Balls Association, a group of former athletes and officials.
Greco was a star quarterback at Lower Moreland under head coach Mark Mayson and went on to Delaware Valley University where he threw for 3,974 yards and 45 touchdowns. When Greco finished his career in 2001, he was DelVal’s second all-time leader in completions (299), passing yards (3,974) and passing touchdowns (41) in just two seasons.
He has an 82-13 record as the head coach of the University’s football team since 2014. Greco has won five Middle Atlantic Conference championships and six trips to the NCAA Division III playoffs, and has coached players who have gone on to play in the USFL, Canadian Football League and XFL.
“I’m just really proud of the team,” Greco told KYW Newsradio during his first season as head coach. “We have a group of guys here that prepare very well, every week. And that’s where the credit’s due. Our coaching staff is working hard, we have a bunch of good assistant coaches here. And as a coach, you’re only as good as your players, and that’s what we have. We have a bunch of really good football players here.”
Greco’s award is named in memory of a former star basketball player at Abraham Lincoln High School and Temple University. Kennedy spent a year with the NBA’s Philadelphia Warriors, then played minor league baseball for several years in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
