Captured: Three men, one of whom drove a vehicle stolen from Cheltenham, charged with first-degree murder

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Norristown Police Chief Jacqueline Bailey-Davis announced on Wednesday, January 31 that Damon Brantley Jr., 18, of Norristown; Daquan Allen, 29, of Norristown; and Jerry Butler, 28, of Philadelphia were captured in Endicott, New York after being pursued with arrest warrants on charges of First-Degree Murder, Second-Degree Murder and Robbery.

The charges against the three defendants are related to the January 20, 2024 murder of William Carter on the zero block of West Wood Street in Norristown.

A $2,000 cash reward for each suspect had been offered for information on their whereabouts. All three suspects will be transported back to Montgomery County to face charges, the District Attorney’s office said.

The murder investigation began after Norristown Police were notified of shots fired at West Wood Street and Powell Street. They arrived to find Carter dead on the sidewalk on the west side of West Wood Street. A joint homicide investigation by Norristown Police and Montgomery County Detectives found that Brantley, Allen and Butler were three of the males involved in the armed robbery and killing of Carter, with Brantley identified as the shooter.

Video surveillance captured three males as they ran from a gray Toyota RAV-4 and robbed the victim. After the defendants robbed the victim, Brantley fired three times in quick succession, shooting Carter once in the head, killing him. The three shots were fired so fast that detectives believe the firearm used by Brantley was equipped with an illegal “switch,” a device that allows a semi-automatic firearm to become fully automatic and had an extended magazine. Detectives found three 9mm Luger shell casings at the scene.

An extended magazine and 9mm Luger ammunition, as well as other evidence connecting Brantley to the murder, was found in Brantley’s girlfriend’s apartment in Norristown.

The investigation also found that Brantley had been in possession of and driving the Toyota Rav-4 multiple times since the vehicle was stolen on December 21, 2023, in Cheltenham Township, and was seen on video wearing the same clothing earlier in the day at a Norristown High School basketball game, where Brantley spoke with a school resource officer.

Other evidence connects the three males to the robbery and shooting.
