Bryn Athyn Borough held a special public meeting on the evening of Monday, March 25 to discuss an Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement with Lower Moreland Township.
The agreement is intended to address the future of firefighting and EMS delivery in the communities, officials said.
The adjacent municipalities are looking to establish “a new organization structure to include BAFC and Huntingdon Valley Fire Company to reduce duplication of services (insurance, equipment, personnel, etc.), provide adequate personnel and apparatus response, and to ensure the continuance of adequate firefighting and EMS delivery well into the future,” according to a social media post.
According to a letter on behalf of Bryn Athyn Borough, both fire companies “are deemed unsustainable in their present forms.” The letter notes that Bryn Athyn Fire Company operates at a “significant budget deficit.”
The agreement will be discussed at a borough council meeting on Monday, April 1 at 7:00pm.
From Bryn Athyn Fire Company’s Facebook post:
Bryn Athyn Fire Company has been a proud supporter of the establishment of an emergency services advisory committee, hiring of a Joint Emergency Services Chief to oversee all emergency operations in both Bryn Athyn Boro and Lower Moreland Township, with the intent to establish a new organization structure to include BAFC and Huntingdon Valley Fire Company to reduce duplication of services (insurance, equipment, personnel, etc.), provide adequate personnel and apparatus response, and to ensure the continuance of adequate firefighting and EMS delivery well into the future. It is our department’s intent to enter into an agreement with both municipalities to delegate operational control of our agency to the Joint Chief of Emergency Services while the new, overall model of services is determined.
