Aspiring Eagle Scout, volunteers replace planter boxes by Jenkintown Borough Hall

Niko Barnett, a 17-year-old member of Scouts BSA Troop 201 at Immaculate Conception Church in Jenkintown, spent the weekend beautifying the outside of Jenkintown’s Borough Hall for an Eagle Project to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program of Scouting America.

The project was an opportunity for Barnett to demonstrate leadership while benefiting the community. Over 25 teens and adults joined Barnett in replacing two of the borough’s planter boxes with custom-built replacements made of cedar.

Barnett worked with the borough’s Environmental Advisory Committee, Borough Council Member Alexandria Khalil, and Borough Manager George Locke to design durable and attractive replacements for the existing boxes.

Foreman Jim Riggins and Anthony McAllister of Borough Public Works provided logistical support, and Jenkintown Borough donated the materials, with some additional donations received from Geppert Lumber in Roslyn and the Barnett family.

Only four percent of boy scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout since its inception in 1911.

Troop 201 serves youth of all genders ages 11 through 17. More information can be found at JenkintownTroop201.org.
