Arcadia University to host service and celebration events next week to honor MLK

Arcadia University in Glenside will host Day of Service volunteer events on Monday, January 20 and Thursday, January 23 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Cradles to Crayons Cardmaking will take place on Monday from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. Students, alumni, faculty, and staff will be designing cards for elementary-aged students, which will be delivered to Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory as part of their efforts to give away 10,000 backpacks to children in need.

Glam Up Glenside, scheduled at the same time, will see students, alumni, faculty, and staff partake in a community clean-up effort. The clean-up will take place outside of Oak Summit Apartments between Royal and Forsythe avenues.

A Community Education event will take place from 5:00pm to 6:30pm on Thursday.

Kenneth “Freedom Smitty” Salaam, known for his work to “improve the lives of all,” will share his experiences and speak about how today’s students can help make the world a better place. Mr. Salaam traveled the country to engage in social justice advocacy alongside Civil Rights leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Stokley Carmichael, Fannie Lou Hamer, and more.

The event will also feature roundtable discussions centered on how nonviolence activism aligns with Arcadia’s Lived Values and initiatives.
