Amazon will close all of its Amazon Fresh grocery stores, including its Willow Grove (Abington Township) location at 102 Park Avenue, according to AboutAmazon.com, the company’s blog.
Amazon did not provide a timeline for the store closures, though some shuttered Amazon Fresh stores could be converted into Whole Foods Markets, which are owned by Amazon.
“Whole Foods Market, a pioneer and leader in natural and organic foods, has seen strong success since our 2017 acquisition, with over 40% sales growth and expansion to more than 550 locations,” the blog says. “Accelerating this growth, we are now planning to invest in opening more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years.”
Amazon will continue to operate its Fresh online grocery service and will expand its line of Whole Foods Daily Shops, which are mini-markets that offer a smaller assortment of grocery items.
The move comes with Amazon set to layoff around 15,000 workers, The Philadelphia Business Journal said.
“Amazon Grocery recorded the largest year-over-year sales increase among Greater Philadelphia grocery retailers in 2025, adding $97.5 million in revenue,” The Journal wrote in another article. “The Amazon Grocery brand, which includes Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market, increased regional grocery sales by 17.5% to $655.2 million for the year ended March 31, up from $557.7 million in the prior 12 months.”
Amazon debuted its Fresh grocery chain in 2020. The Willow Grove location opened on November 7, 2024 after a series of delays. The landlord of the Willow Grove Shopping Center filed a lawsuit in March 2023 alleging that Amazon was breaching its lease agreement.
Amazon filed a counterclaim in May 2023 alleging that the landlord wasn’t holding up their end of the bargain, either.
